AWDTF Holds Second Open Studios
By Mary T. Rogers,
AWDTF Member
On Saturday May 5, 2007, the Artists with
Disabilities Task Force (AWDTF) held its second Open Studios event at Cambridge
Focus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Over 15 artists were represented in the show.
The afternoon’s events included music, storytelling, and “Meet the Artist”
talks. Refreshments were served throughout the event.
Those in attendance for this event found a
delightful mix of people, activities and food along with an opportunity to speak
with the artists and to purchase their favorite pieces of art. Both performing,
and visual arts were represented at this entertaining event. The afternoon’s
events started with tours through the “galleries” of the Cambridge focus. The
art in the galleries represented many media such as beads, glasswork, origami,
clay figurines, photography, watercolor, charcoal, oil pastels, mixed media and
oils. Even poetry placed in settings that created wall art was included. Some of
the artists that presented work in the gallery were Lauretta “Billi”
Billingsley, Tiffany Cespedes, Lisa Corfman, Kathy Johnson, Rachel Klein, Julie
Langbort, M.L. Morgan, Raine Newman, Mei-lin Po, Gregory Rogers, Joseph Russo,
Allison Nutting, Cynthia Segal, Kimberley Shaw, and Jessica Vohs.
Music and audience involvement was provided by
guitarist Erik Beaverson who played tunes from the 70s, 80s and 90s for the
guests and artists to sing along. Mei-Lin Po followed with storytelling about a
juggler with his own timing and the guests and artists were reminded through the
story that they need to follow their own timing to truly become their best. The
storytelling was followed by “Meet the Artist” talks given by the 10 artists
present. The event ended on a very upbeat note as everyone present realized how
special each and every individual is and how much each individual enriches the
life of all of us.
Thanks for an abundance of delicious
refreshments for the event go out to Mei-Lin Po, Debbie Simon, Greg Rogers, and
Dunkin Donuts who provided fruit, cheese and crackers, various baked goods,
pastries, soda and coffee. Flyers for the event were designed and provided for
by AWDTF member Lisa Corfman. Special thanks go out to all who attended the
event and came to appreciate all the art presented. A very special thank you
goes to Lloyd Simon owner of Cambridge Focus for housing this lively and
exciting event.
If you are interested in attending another
event like this the AWDTF will be holding another “open studios” event in the
fall!
